Christmas (Baskets) Family Sponsorship Program

Thank you for another successful year!

As we close out the 2017 calendar year, Glen Ellyn Junior Woman’s Club would like to thank everyone who participated in the 2017 Christmas Family Adoption aka Christmas Baskets Program. We successfully provided food (basic perishable and nonperishable pantry items), toiletries, toys, and gifts to almost 130 needy families and seniors throughout Glen Ellyn.

The Junior Woman’s Club is so fortunate to be able to coordinate this project with the participation of such a generous and supportive community. Your involvement in our program brings something essential during the holiday season: HOPE! By donating, volunteering, or adopting, you bring hope and encouragement to those who are struggling, and you contribute to an overall a sense of community. The families you help are grateful not just for the material gifts they receive but also for the loving kindness you all demonstrate.

Our program cannot succeed without help from volunteers, Secret Santas, generous donors, local schools and business (toy and toiletry drive), and local organizations. We thank you for your time and donations and encourage you to participate again next year.

Special thanks to the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry, funding made possible by generous non-profit organizations, including the Glen Ellyn chapters of Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club and Lions Club as well as the Central DuPage Kiwanis Club. Glen Ellyn Volunteer Firefighters, Glenbard West, all the local schools/businesses who participated in our toy drive (Lincoln Elementary, Forest Glen, Churchill, Glen Ellyn Park District, Glen Ellyn Civic Center, Arbor View, and Parkview Elementary), St Petronille, Glen Ellyn Newcomers, Parkview Community Church, Glenbard West Basketball Team, Parkview Community Church, the social workers who identified the local families, the many individuals and groups that adopted families, and to all the Glen Ellyn Junior Volunteers.

We sincerely hope you enjoyed your experience and will consider joining us again next year. We wish you a healthy and happy new year filled with the blessings of family and friends.

In gratitude,

Lynn Lullo and Dawn Cassata

Additional information about the GEJWC Christmas Family Sponsorship Program

* What does it mean to sponsor a family?
A family that is sponsored is given new gifts for each person in the family. Those gifts are guided by a list of needs/wishes the family provides (along with sizes, etc.). The needs will range from basic clothing necessities to household goods. We have families that range from very small to very large and we will help you find the family that best fits your budget. We also have Seniors that need to be sponsored.

* Who sponsors the families?
Individuals, families, organizations, playgroups, neighborhoods, businesses, etc. participate as Secret Santas in our program. We can tailor a family for any group/ individual.

* What is included in the "basket"?
The word "basket" doesn't quite do justice to what our sponsored families receive! Along with the new gifts that are purchased for the families, D89/D41 schools and local businesses host a toy drive, so every child receives at least one new toy or gift card. Glenbard West High School supplies toiletries through their school-run toiletry drive. In addition, we work with the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry to ensure that each family receives basic perishable and nonperishable pantry items.

* Who delivers to the families?
Volunteers! Anyone who would like to bring joy to a family is welcome to be a part of our delivery team. Many groups that sponsor a family also choose to deliver personally although this is by no means a requirement. Glen Ellyn's Volunteer Fire Department is one of our largest volunteer groups – they deliver all morning long!

* Where do these families live?
All of our sponsored families are local and live within the boundaries of our Glen Ellyn School Districts.

* How are the families identified?
School social workers help us identify families in need, and each family is required to apply to our program. Those applications are then reviewed and confirmed. We have the capacity to service approximately 100 families and 25 Seniors; we anticipate maxing our capacity again this year.

* What are other ways to help this program?
You can purchase gifts, donate money or gift cards to individuals or the household as a whole, and/or donate supplies (gift bags of all sizes are greatly needed, gift wrap, tags, tape) We also need VOLUNTEERS to help us wrap the toys from the toy drive, organize and sort out the food products and toiletries, assemble the "baskets" aka delivery bags, and deliver the lot to the families on delivery day (Saturday, December 16th).

* Where is the location?
Parkview Community Church (764 St. Charles Rd, Glen Ellyn - in front of Ackerman Park) has graciously offered the use of their facility again this year.
